Police officers from the Police Tourist Unit, Criminal Investigations Department and the Uniformed Branch are in Nadi investigating an incident where some landowners disrupted operations at the Cloud 9 floating island today.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a group of landowners from Nabila and Momi cut the ropes to the pontoon.
The landowners claim the floating island which has become a tourist attraction especially for members of the surfing community is polluting their fishing ground.
Cloud 9 owner, Tony Philip Junior says the men armed with cane knives cut off ropes to the pontoon in the presence of guests and staff.
Philip Junior says the pontoon which is usually moored in the Navula Reef about 850 metres from the world famous surf breaks – Cloudbreak-floated into open waters.
He says he had lodged a complaint with the police and authorities earlier when the villagers threatened his business.
