The Fijian government will be meeting donors, partners and friends at the 6th session of the Pacific Platform for Disaster Risk Management in Lami to assist with the reconstruction and relocation of communities threatened by the effects of climate change.
Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Inia Seruiratu told FBC News, at least forty communities have written to government requesting too be relocated to higher and safer grounds.
Seruiratu says the government allocated $1m in the 2013 and another $1m in 2014 budget for disaster risk reduction.
“The Government has a list of all these communities and at the same time looking at ways and means in which they can be assisted. We have started with a few as most of these relocations are depended on the funds available.”
Government has begun the process of relocating a number of coastal communities to higher ground as part of its climate change adaptation measures.
