Low number of invalid votes a good sign: Saneem

September 22, 2014 6:10 am

The Elections Office is happy that the voter education it carried out assisted the people and thus the low number of invalid votes.

Elections Supervisor Mohammed Saneem says this indicates the people were well informed.

“Of the total Four Hundred and Ninety six thousand, three hundred and sixty four votes received in this election, there were three thousand seven hundred and fourteen votes that were not counted. These were the invalid votes which is 0.75%. I believe this deserves an applause.”

Prior to handing over the writ of election to the Electoral Commission chairman Chen Bunn Young, Saneem took time to thank the voters for playing their part in electing a democratic government.

“All the voters for turning out in numbers and for taking us to 83.9%, I will say 84 % and I would also now acknowledge the hard work of the Fijian Elections office staff. Some of them are present here some of them are watching from home – Ladies and Gentlemen you have done Fiji proud. We have proven that a new set of people, with new ideas have the ability to perform, to give a better service to the nation beyond what the nation expects.”

The last election recorded 6.4% invalid votes.
