A new bio fuel lab has been established at the University of the South Pacific to analyse the standard of fuel.

This is a first such lab in the Pacific that will analyse diesel, petrol, biodiesel and ethanol fuel.

Energy Department acting director – Pranil Singh says the first phase of work on the lab cost the Government $800 000.

Singh says the Government wants all fuel produced and sold in Fiji to meet international requirements.

“When we look at the whole bio-fuel industry in Fiji we have recently passed the standard for Fiji. The standard basically tells you what quality of fuel should be sold, these are very critical properties.”

He says the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014, after which Fiji is expected to be a leading nation in the bio fuel industry.
