Illegal home stay is becoming a major concern within the Suva vicinity.

Twelve such operators were caught after a string of investigations by the police, government authorities and the Suva City Council.

These illegal operators majorly cater for the foreign market and are largely owned by foreigners.

SCC special administrator Chandu Umaria says out of the 21 home stay businesses, only nine were registered and operating legally.

“Like I have said the Police have been working on this matter and come this year around from January we have been very very strict in making use that before we do issue a license for the operation of home stay, that we do also contact the Police Department for any clearance or any input they would like to give us before we approve the license.”

Umaria says they are just the licensing agency and police and the immigration department also have a part to play.
