Fighting stigma of mental health is still a challenge in Fiji.
The Psychiatric Survivors Association was formed in 2004 to help those with mental illness cope after being discharged from St Giles.
Advocacy officer – Luke Taveta says the general perception in people needs to change.
“It’s a stigma to have mental illness. We have learnt to accept that and through our awareness campaigns we have been informing people that mental illness is just like any other illness.”
Taveta adds while funding remains a drawback, constantly raising awareness on the issue will help society accept the mentally challenged.
