The Water Authority of Fiji has set aside five million dollars to repair the sewerage system in Suva.
The existing sewers were built in 1940 and there have been no major repairs since.
The old pipes have developed cracks, discharging untreated sewage and causing environmental and health problems.
Engineers are now identifying leaking sewer lines using CCTV cameras.
Work is expected to begin later this year.
