The defence counsel is currently cross examining former Board Secretary of Fijian Holdings Limited Sitiveni Weleilakeba.
Weleilakeba is the main witness in the trial of former Director Laisenia Qarase who faces six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharge of duty with respect to a property in which he has a private interest.
Weleilakeba earlier this morning told the court that a letter dated 5th of October 1994, addressed to the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Fijian Affairs was sent by the Chief Executive for changes in the directorship of class A and b shares.
It said Laisenia Qarase has to retire from B class shares and be re-elected for A class shares.
Six out of the nine Directors can be nominated and together with Qarase with and FDB Chairman Lyle Cupit to move from representing class B shares to class A shares, which leaves the four directorships of class B shares vacant.
Until August 2000 Qarase remained with the FHL Board.
On top of that Weleilakeba told the court that in March 2008 he was charged by FICAC on a count each of forgery and uttering forged documents.
After eight months those charges were dropped, later on new charges were filed against him relating to him filing forged documents and within a month FICAC applied to the magistrate’s court for the matter transferred to the High Court.
Later on those charges were ultimately dropped.
