Landowners have no authority or traditional claim over minerals extracted in Fiji says Assistant Director Mining Venasio Nasara.

Nasara told FBC News while iTaukei landowners control leasing and approval of mining – all minerals belong to the government.

“At the end of the day the Government has the final say or the right to determine wheather it wants to share its ownership with landowners or not , but under the law the State owns the minerals.”

The comment comes after landowners questioned the i-Taukei Land Trust Board on their rights.

There are a lot of mining activities currently underway in Fiji.
