The European Union (EU) plans to inject millions of dollars for sugar support directly into Fiji’s Annual Budget.
If successful, this will mean the EU will continue to financially support keys sectors like the sugar industry by increasing the budgetary allowance.
EU Ambassador to Fiji and the Pacific, Andrew Jacobs, says this programme will change the approach to the sugar sector in Fiji.
“We are now moving onto budget support which means that the European Union funds will be channeled directly into the Government’s budget – there are certain conditions we have to work together to meet before we can finalize the Budget support programme.”
The European Union has to date funded specific projects and provided technical assistance and equipment but that’s about to change.
Jacobs says the EU is switching to Budget Support because it’s the most effective and efficient way to provide development assistance.
