A new by-pass road has been opened in the Bau District in Nausori, reconnecting the Kings Highway following the slip at Kasavu.
The highway has been closed, meaning people travelling between Nausori and Korovou will have to use the by-pass taking them through Vuci and Raralevu.
Fiji Roads Authority Chief Executive John Hutchinson says they will now speed up work at the Kasavu site, but no promises on when the Kings Highway will re-open.
“To be honest right now, I don’t have a timeframe on how long that’s going to take. It’s certainly going to be more than 2 or 3 months. Hopefully it’s not going to be more than a year but I can’t answer that question at this point in time.I wouldn’t even hazard to guess what it’s going to cost.”
The 7 kilometre by-pass itself has an 18 tonne limit meaning all heavy vehicles will have to use the Queens Highway to get around Viti Levu.
People in buses will be driven to the Kasavu slip where they walk across and board another bus waiting on the other side.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened the by-pass yesterday.
