The Agriculture ministry together with the Pacific Community and donor partner-Food and Agriculture Organization are concentrating efforts to conserve indigenous animal genetic resources for future food security.
SPC’s Animal Production Extension Officer, Andrew Tukana says livestock breed in the South Pacific are unique due to the Pacific’s geographic isolation so there is a need to protect these breeds.
“Climate change is affecting our livestock and genetic resources; so with climate change, there is loss of habitat and our native species of livestock and animals are becoming extinct now so we need to conserve them.”
The Agriculture ministry is currently working with partners to help minimize the adverse effect on the livestock production system.
Similar projects are also underway in six other countries in the pacific.
