Maritime and Safety Authority of Fiji has confirmed that all derelict ships in Fiji waters are free of heavy diesel that could harm the environment.
This was confirmed by Chief Executive, John Tunidau while making submissions to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
“What they normally request MSAF is to ensure give us the co-ordinates for the vessels, that’s where we come in, we just have to go down there, check if the vessel is free, nothing else is on the vessel before we give the co-ordinates and they go and salvaged the vessel, that’s where we come in.”
Tunidau says it is the ship owner’s obligation to remove run-down ships and the Authority only ensures that these vessels are safe before salvaging.
