No legal action can be taken by government over the death of Ashneel Singh who was killed in a road accident in October 2015.
Singh’s vehicle was hit by another driven by South African diplomat, Theo Mostert who later returned home without facing legal action.
Mostert also passed away in his homeland after leaving Fiji, but Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama says international laws meant no action could have been taken.
“His diplomatic immunity prevented any investigation of the incident from moving forward as the South African government has not waived his diplomatic immunity. As a result, the facts of the case remain unclear. While we would have hoped that the South African government would have waived immunity and allowed for a thorough investigation that has not happened.”
Bainimarama says that there is no third party insurance claim as it was a head on collision.
