The management of the Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited has assured that safety of its miners is absolutely paramount.
The company temporarily shut down two of its underground shafts on Tuesday following reports of injuries.
The mining company met with the Mineral Resources Department yesterday to discuss safety issues.
Mineral Development Director Dr Raijeli Taga told FBC News that while many issues were discussed, preventing injuries was on top of their agenda.
“Any accidents in the mine site is of major concern. The loss of human life is of human concern in any work area so that is important to us and that concerns safety so that’s why we had the meeting today to address them. One of the way forward is the safety audit to address the safety issues underground so that’s the way forward we have discussed and a lot of other technical things to be addressed by the mine.”
The Mining Company says it’s committed to address the safety issues that were raised today.
Underground operations have been halted to accommodate an audit is being carried out by the Mineral Resources Department.
The decision to temporarily shut down the mine was made following a fatality and numerous injuries sustained by miners working in the shafts.
The safety audit is expected to take a few weeks.
