One in every six people between the ages of twenty-four to sixty-four years is diabetic.
This was revealed by Fiji National University Assistant Professor General Surgery, Basharat Munshi, during the Fiji and Apollo health forum in Suva today.
Professor Munshi says there are 76,130 established cases of diabetes in Fiji.
He says that type two diabetes is projected to increase.
According to a survey 16 percent adults had diabetes in 2002 which increased to 30 percent last year.
Professor Munshi says one of the challenges they face is that patients present themselves late to the hospital.
He also highlighted that there is lack of foot clinic and specialists in Fiji.
Specialists from the Apollo Hospital in India are part of the forum.
The forum is aimed to create a platform to exchange medical and scientific experienced by experts in the health care industry in Fiji and India.
