It’s been revealed that taxi drivers are NOT doing their part of the bargain with the Department of Social Welfare that they should provide fare discounts to beneficiaries of the taxi fare assistance.

And they are being warned by Social Welfare Secretary Govind Sami to be honest or face the consequences from the Land Transport Authority.

According to Sami his Ministry has continued to receive complaints that some taxi drivers are refusing to provide 20 percent discount to bona-fide card holders.

Sami says the Fiji Taxi Association and Government had entered into a Deed of Agreement for Government to provide 20 percent discount on taxi fares for disabled persons and senior citizens.

The disabled are issued with Red ID cards while senior citizens are issued with yellow ID Cards.

The discount on taxi fares is ONLY up to 20 kilometers of the distance travelled.

The total beneficiaries of the bus and taxi fare concessions currently stands at 29 thousand 1 hundred 22.
