Appropriate action needed to address diabetes: Alex O’Connor
Report by: Praneeta Prakash
Appropriate actions are needed to address the needs of people with diabetes.
Assistant Health Minister, Alex O’Connor made these comments during the launch of national diabetes registration drive.
The aim of the drive is to improve the health status of all Fijians.
O’Connor says there has been an increase in the number of non-communicable diseases.
He says diabetes is one of the major concerns as amputation cases have increased significantly in the last two years.
“Statistics further shows that the amputation rates increased from 12.1 to 12.6 percent from 2015 to 2016. As such the major strategy in preventing amputation is through early detection of abnormalities, education of clients and empowering people living with diabetes to take more proactive approach to health and wellness.”
Seven hundred and ninety-one people lost one of their limbs last year.
