The Australian Government will be investing more than twelve million dollars for a pilot program aimed at reducing mosquito borne diseases in the South Pacific Island countries.

Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, says small island nations face a growing threat from dengue fever, malaria, zika and chikungunya virus.

“We know that dengue fever affects something like a million people a day around the world and there has been increasing outbreaks here in the Pacific and are becoming increasing severe. We’re going to pilot a program that will reduce the rates of dengue. The Australian Government will be investing seven point seven million dollars to reduce the rates of mosquito borne disease.”

Bishop who was in the country for the Pacific Islands Forum meeting says they will work with relevant parties to ensure the effective delivery of the program.
