Opposition MP Salote Radrodro has claimed that the 2013 Constitution is gender biased, threatening the lives of women and not catering to their interests.
“Women’s group generally view the 2013 constitution with great disappointment for it threatens lives in a variety of ways and is much less favourable to the position of women as compared to the Yash Ghai draft. Women in Fiji compose more than fifty percent of Fiji’s population and yet their issue, interests that’s supposed to protect them is not reflected in the constitution.”
However, former Education minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy told parliament today, the supreme law has made considerable progress over the years, granting equal opportunities for all Fijians.
Dr. Reddy says the government had informed all Fijians of their manifesto which was in line with the 2013 constitution before running for election.
“Madam speaker we took the constitution to the people and we campaigned on this constitution. It was a referendum. We told them about this constitution. We got this constitution and said we going in elections with this and this is our manifesto. Constitution is the law of our country that provides the frame work for the conduct of government and all Fijians. Commit ourselves to the recognition and protection of human rights and respect for human dignity.”
Dr. Reddy also urged the opposition to go over the current constitution again as it briefly explains the equal rights of every Fijian.
