The Ministry of Health is currently working on drafting a new Public Health Act.
Assistant Minister, Alex O’Connor says the old act which came into effect in January 1936 has undergone amendments however it still echoes the past.
“Clearly the act is unsuitable for a modern aspiring country such as Fiji. The need for it to be updated is long overdue. I am pleased to recognize his Excellency’s clear commitment for that to happen.”
O’Connor says with the new diseases such as SARS, Ebola and other deadly diseases that emerge rapidly, it’s about time the ministry changes the Act to be in line with the current issues affecting the Health ministry.
He adds the ministry needs both clinical and regulatory tools to safeguard Fijians from such diseases.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization is working alongside the ministry officials and international experts to finalize the draft.
O’Connor is confident that it will be ready in due time for parliament to consider.
