The trial of a woman charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of criminal intimidation began in the Suva High Court this morning.
Shahista Devi is alleged to have attempted to murder her 4-year-old son and threatened to kill her mother-in-law last year.
Taking the stand as the first prosecution witness in court today was Devi’s mother-in-law, Madhur Lata.
Lata recalled the day of February 6th last year, telling the court that her two grandchildren, (Devi’s children) had asked for breakfast and she gave them biscuits, butter and tea.
Minutes later, her daughter-in-law Devi woke up and got furious on her for touching her butter. Devi’s husband intervened to stop his wife from arguing but she would not stop.
According to the mother-in-law the argument continued for an hour.
Lata said Devi did not prepare breakfast for the family that morning and took her kids inside her room.
The distraught mother-in-law then decided to call Devi’s brother so that he can counsel her. However Devi came out of the room and started swearing at the witness.
The case continues in the Suva High Court.
