National Federation Party MP, Prem Singh, was told to withdraw a statement where he mentioned former parliamentarian Abdul Sayed-Khaiyum.
Sayed-Khaiyum is a former NFP parliamentarian and also the father of current Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Singh, while speaking on the President’s speech claimed opposing a constitution was not a crime and claimed Abdul Sayed-Khaiyum had contested elections under previous elections under the old constitutions.
However, the Attorney General moved a point of order asking the Speaker to ask Singh to refrain from dragging family members into a debate.
This is what the speaker had to say.
Under the point of orders, you should not be mentioning a person who cannot defend himself here, therefore you should not have brought in that. So please withdraw…..So I am telling you to withdraw…. He is not here to defend himself, what you are saying I do not know is right or wrong, but the person is not here to defend himself….So please withdraw.”
Following this, Singh withdrew his statement.
