National Climate week designed to raise awareness

September 25, 2017 1:07 am

Fiji is currently having its first National Climate Week designed to raise awareness on the effects of climate change, educate people on Fiji’s COP23 Presidency and highlight our experiences relating to the issue.

Speaking on FBC TV’s 4the Record last night, Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the effects of climate change is becoming visible every day.

Sayed-Khaiyum says it’s sad that Fijians still don’t take this issue seriously.

“It’s a weeklong series of events and activities to essentially raise awareness about climate change and its effects and what we need to do in working together as a nation and indeed as a global family to try and stop the terrible effects of and to raise that awareness in a way that some people take examples away from this week long activities. Like there are things happening like the raising sea level. We have already moved three villages to higher grounds, one is Vunidogoloa in Cakaudrove, Tukaraki village in Ra and Denimanu village in Yadua Island. These villages had to be physically moved because waters were going into areas where it traditionally didn’t.”

National Climate Week is celebrated in Fiji from 22nd to 29th September.
