At least one to two cyclones are expected to hit Fiji in the 2017/2018 cyclone season.
This is in addition to a possible four-to-six cyclones across the region which could affect the Fiji group.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Disaster Management and Meteorological Services Meleti Bainimarama says Fijians need to be prepared.
“For those tropical cyclones, disturbances and depressions passing close to the country, associated active cloud and rainbands may occasionally affect Fiji with marked rainfall and possible flooding, including flooding of low lying coastal areas.”
Director for Fiji Meteorology Ravind Kumar confirms that of the 2 cyclones that may hit Fiji, one of them could be quite strong.
“The strength of a cyclone that we are looking at, the one to two cyclones that will come across to Fiji, at least one of them may reach a category three or even above.”
The cyclone season officially begins on the first of November and runs through to April 30th, next year.
