Prime Minister and COP 23 President, Voreqe Bainimarama commended the United Kingdom and Canada’s effort to support the fight against climate change.
At a meeting with UK Minister of State for Climate Change and Industry, Claire Perry, Bainimarama praised the two countries on the launch of the “Powering Past Coal Alliance”
This is an alliance of governments and businesses launched during COP23 that aims to rapidly phase out traditional coal power.
Fiji joined the alliance during the COP23 negotiations in Bonn Germany last month.
Bainimarama reiterated Fiji’s commitment to the global shift away from the burning of coal to cleaner renewable power sources.
Coal power is one of the major source of carbon emissions globally.
The talks between the two ministers also covered next year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London.
The Prime Minister welcomed the topics of climate resilience and adaptation as part of the meeting agenda.
Bainimarama also briefed Perry on the International Blue Carbon Partnership undertaken by Australia to protect and manage coastal blue carbon ecosystems in the Pacific.
