The Government has been urged to launch a systematic collection of information for Fijians with albinism.
This was highlighted by the UN Independent expert for Albinism –Ikponwsa Ero who is in the country for a week, undertaking a country mission and gathering information on the situation of albinism in Fiji.
Ero says the absence of data on albinism is one of her findings which shows their invisibility and isolation in the country.
“I am recommending a supplementary data gathering through surveys through the Ministry of Education with the use of the community rehabilitation assistance that reports to the ministry for and also what they call the HIE (Household Information Economic Survey)recommending that in the meantime before their next census we take advantage of these structures to gather information on the data concerning people with Albinism .”
Ero strongly believes, there is a need to strengthen awareness through the implementation of outreach programs on Albinism.
