Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is reminding Fijians to verify information, especially on what they post online.
While opening the 19th Attorney General’s Conference, Bainimarama says social media has its advantages and disadvantages.
Bainimarama says that in a modern society, truth-seeking should be a vital exercise for each and every Fijian.
However, the Prime Minister says that this isn’t always easy, especially when some find it in their best political interest to spread misinformation to try and derail progress and cause instability.
“For example social media it can be a valuable tool for spreading information and encouraging healthy discourse however it is also increasingly becoming a tool for spreading lies, breeding intolerance and inciting confusion.”
Bainimarama adds that information is vital to people, however, getting the correct information is more important.
“As such, I ask all Fijians to operate as independent fact checkers especially in the upcoming elections. Look at Fiji in a critical lens whether that be social media or the news media or just talking among fellow Fijians.”
Around five hundred participants are attending the AG’s Conference in Natadola which ends tomorrow.
