Teachers around the country are being urged to think twice about being part of the organised Fiji Trades Union Congress march that will be held in Nadi tomorrow.
This was highlighted by Education Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum adding that teachers should focus more on improving the ministry as well as educating the future generation.
”I would urge all teachers to please look at the reforms that they’ve had. Some of them have enormous pay rises. They need to focus on the fact that school starts on Monday. I have seen a memo by Agni Deo Singh under the letter head of Fiji Teachers Union sent out to various divisions of theirs asking teachers to march on Saturday in Nadi. We urged them to look at the big picture and not get caught up in this politicization.”
However, Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh says they’ve circulated emails, calls and visited schools – urging teachers to support the march tomorrow.
”Fiji Teachers Union has called upon its members to come and join the march and we are hoping that they will turn up in numbers tomorrow to provide this solidarity support. This is nothing about politics, this is nothing about being against anybody or the government. This is basically a workers organization supporting another workers organization.”
Singh says they have around five thousand members and is an affiliate of the FTUC – which he says is only right for FTU to show their support during such times.
