Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says ‘democracy’ is not only about having the General Elections.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the culture of democracy must be engendered at all levels.
He says various organizations and associations do not follow democratic processes while electing members.
Sayed-Khaiyum says many Trade Unions have been resistant to Electoral Commissioners and the Elections Supervisor and have complete lack of democracy in the way they conducted elections.
“The way that the Elections was conducted for example in the Fiji Public Service Association’s elections was that the general secretary even though that he may be running for elections was the one who kept the ballot boxes – how ridiculous is that – it is like asking those people who will be candidates of the 2018 elections they’ll keep the ballot boxes at their house. We never imagine that – how can we let that happen in the trade union elections.”
The Minister says the idea of subscription to transparency will ensure everybody gets a fair say and that their say is actually represented in the final outcome.
