Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says the Voter Education Program will enable students to not only understand the processes for themselves but impart the knowledge to their parents and grandparents.

Launching the program for Year 10 students, Sayed-Khaiyum said people, particularly in their thirties and fourties, have a tendency of spreading false information via social media.

He says the Program will enable these young people to actually correct their elders.

“We found this exactly in the budgetary processes. When we started two years ago having a budget consultation with high school students – I was informed subsequently that many people sit around the grog bowl and talk about Fiji’s debt is this much – bigger than the USA – these young people are actually correcting them, giving them the right information. So it is these young people I actually call the ambassadors of the truth, ambassadors of those people who actually believe in the system and will ensure that the system is known by everybody else.”

Year 10 students will have a voter education program as part of their curriculum which will be a substitute for an existing portion of the Social Science curriculum.

The workbook will be distributed in the second week of Term One.
