The Fijian population is growing but at a slow rate.
This was the finding of the recent Population and Housing Census undertaken by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
The total population stands at 884,887 compared to 837,271 in the 2007 census.
Senior Statistician from the Bureau of Statistics, Emali Soderberg, says ¤the population has increased by 47,616 or 5.7 per cent.
A number of reasons have been attributed to the slow growth.
“Well the growth rate from the past few census have dropped – from 1986 it was two percent, 1996 it was 0.8 percent, 2007 it was 0.7 – this time around it has dropped to 0.6 percent. That could be due to a number of reasons – one being there is a lot of out migration and the fertility levels have also dropped – so our population is growing but at a slow rate.”
The 2017 census had 99.5 percent coverage.
