All communication lines to Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa have been lost as Tropical Cyclone Gita passed over the Southern Lau group this afternoon.
National Disaster Management Office Director Anare Leweniqila has confirmed they tried to contact the villagers in these islands, however, has been unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Gita which is still a Category four system is moving away from the Fiji Group and highly expected to leave Fiji waters by Friday.
Speaking to FBC News, Fiji Meteorological Services Director, Ravin Kumar says the system passed over the Southern Lau group at around 1.30pm.
Kumar says Cyclone Gita did not make landfall on Ono-i-Lau with winds of 68 knots gusting to 84 knots.
“The system is moving westwards at 25km/hr and expected to remain on this track for the next 24 hours. The system continues to move over the Fijian waters with no potential landfalls.”
On its track, Cyclone Gita is expected to move westwards with increased, frequent cloud and rain over Kadavu and Viti Levu for the rest of this week.
Kumar says a change in weather can be expected in the weekend as Cyclone Gita moves towards New Zealand.
