UN Human Rights Commissioner – Zeid Raád Al Hussein says it’s imperative that emergency response plans and disaster awareness campaigns include measures to deal with gender based violence.
Among a number of issues highlighted by the Commissioners official visit to Fiji, Al Hussein noted that gender violence across the region is one of the biggest challenges.
“The effects of climate change and in the incidences of violence against women, it has being well documented that gender based violence including sexual violence rise considerably in the aftermath of natural disasters. Measures to prevent violence against women must be worked into disaster preparedness through consultations with women and with their active involvement.”
The UN Commissioner added that the high rates of violence against women is one of the biggest Human Rights problems in Fijian society inspite of the important steps taken by government to combat it.
