TC Gita loses momentum

Two hundred eighty eight people are in evacuation centres in the Southern Lau group, following Tropical Cyclone Gita, which struck the islands yesterday.
They are currently situated in five evacuation centers and therefigures are expected to drop as clearing and cleaning of debris continues in the affected areas.
Also, this afternoon, preliminary reports received indicate that twenty six homes were partially damaged and ten homes have been fully destroyed in Southern Lau.
Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita category 5 continues to move west ward away from Fiji losing momentum.
Fiji Metrological Service, Director, Ravin Kumar says the category 5 system was located about 235 kilometres south of Kadavu at 2pm.
Kumar says Cyclone Gita is expected to have average winds up to 205 km/hr with momentary gusts to 285 km/hr moving west at about 17km/hr.
On this track, the cyclone centre is expected to be located about 380 kilometres southwest of Kadavu at 2am.
“In terms of weather period of rain for those southern islands and occasional rain can be expected for the rest of the country. Heavy at times with a few squally thunderstorms.”
A gale warning remains in force for Kadavu and nearby smaller islands Ono, Buliya and Dravuni with average speed of 75km/hr with momentary gusts to 100km/hr.
Meanwhile, the gale warning previously issued for Matuku is now cancelled.
