An American company will manage the country’s mahogany sector.
This follows disappointment at the Fiji Hardwood Corporation for showing very little commitment towards the proper management of the country’s mahogany.
The Forestland Group will take over operations from Fiji Hardwood.
Dubbed “Fiji’s green gold” the sector is said to be worth billions of dollars.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says, there was very little commitment by Fiji Hardwood Corporation to properly manage the industry and adapt to modern day methods.
Bainimarama claims poor administration and corruption by the previous management has left Fiji Hardwood in debt which currently stands at two point four million.
He says there were a lot of illegal sales, deliberate low grading and theft.
