The first ever Taveuni Women Talanoa, hosted by DIVA for Equality was held yesterday.
The aim of the talanoa is to create a safe space for women to discuss issues affecting them in their daily life which includes violence, food sovereignty, and climate change and share strategies towards moving forward.
DIVA for Equality’s, Maria Nailevu, says they are encouraging rural remote communities to include women in their conversation.
“Most of these women are disconnected from the urban communities. Most of them don’t have access to information and resources so we are trying to bring the information and we are trying to bring our feminist circles right into the comfort of their communities so women can create their own support group. They can also talk about inter-linkage issues they face in their lives every-day.”
The talanoa yesterday was also to prepare the women towards their first ever Taveuni International Women’s Day March scheduled for tomorrow.
The march aims to engage students and youth in the plastic free event.
