Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa says that the strategic direction for the care of the elderly in Fiji is set out by the National Council of Older Persons Act of 2013.
She says, that the long term focus for the ministry is to set proper standards to ensure that they’re able to properly care for the elderly in state run institutions.
“As you know there are 3 state homes at the moment and as I stated long term we are looking at the demographic changes we expecting as a nation in a decade, 2 decades or 3 decades time and of course government will take that into account dealing with the needs of the nation when that happens. At this time we do have a budget for the maintenance of the existing state homes but I have set up a long term strategic direction for the ministry.”
While answering a supplementary question in parliament, Vuniwaqa explained that they were institutions in Fiji providing care-giving studies.
Earlier this month, the Ministry signed an MOU with the Australian Pacific Technical College to maximize the number of staff within the State funded homes around Fiji.
