The government is owed more than $23.7 million dollars in rental arrears.
Minister for Lands Faiyaz Koya in a ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday noted that despite this there has been an exemplary record in collections.
“As the 2nd February, 2018 it stood at $23, 755, 645.65 and for the past 10 years, the Ministry has been collecting average rental arrears of $13 million per annum.”
Koya also noted that to assist Fijians, the Ministry has introduced an Amnesty period to wavier interest payments in addition to the set-up of an internal unit with personnel specifically working to consult, remind and discuss rental dues with respective state land lessees.
“Currently there is a 6 months Wavier of Interest period, from the 1st of January, 2018 to 30th June, 2018 to allow state land lessees to pay their arrears with interest free.”
Meanwhile the Minister also noted that since 2014, the Ministry of Land has surveyed a total of 40 informal settlements on state land and issued a total of 318 approval notices, 96 of which were for the Western Division, 133 for the North and 89 in the Central Division.
The Ministry anticipates issuing more approval notices and leases that will benefit more families.
