Minister for Employment Hon. Jone Usamate with the RSE Worker Scheme Group from Wayalailai
Report by: Sainiani Boila
A total of 1,060 workers were deployed overseas to work under the Seasonal Workers Scheme since Fiji joined in 2015.
Employment Minister, Jone Usamate says 116 of these workers are female with 944 of them are male workers.
Usamate says Fiji has 33 employers who are currently recruiting local workers of which 12 are from Australia and 20 from New Zealand.
He adds the ministry has changed its recruitment policy by focusing more on the rural areas to avoid urban drift.
“If people are living in rural and maritime areas, participating in this seasonal workers scheme allows them to access income that they can take back and develop their own lives and start small business and so forth I nthe rural areas in which they live. We also know that many in rural areas don’t have much access to work opportunities and this is a great advantage for them."
Usamate says Fiji had sent 82 workers last week which is the largest number of workers sent so far.
The ministry is working to put in place a liaison officer to liaise with the workers and ways to address issues they face.
