There should be more development along the country’s foreshores in the near future with more than a 100 leases issued by the Lands Ministry.
Minister responsible Faiyaz Koya says these foreshore leases have benefited Traditional Fishing Rights Owners through annual payments of quantum for loss of traditional fishing rights whilst creating employment opportunities for the local communities.
“On the issuance of Foreshore leases in the past six months, the Ministry has issued a total of 130 foreshore leases and in all of this, endeavours to achieve the delicate balance in ensuring sustainable development.”
As part of his ministerial statement in Parliament, Koya also highlighted that Foreshore tourism leases are responsible for generating millions of dollars to Fiji’s national economy.
The Minister reiterated the Ministry ensured that any proposed development under these leases were environmentally sound before any further construction.
