Opposition and SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula has today questioned Attorney General and Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s participation in answering all questions regarding Local Government and Environment in parliament.
Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to a question in his capacity as Acting Environment Minister in which Nawaikula objected.
Nawaikula claims that Sayed-Khaiyum has answered about ninety percent of questions in parliament and that a chance should be given to the Assistant Minister Lorna Eden to respond to questions regarding the environment.
“Why don’t you let her talk, you know ninety percent of what is happening here is from the honourable minister, can you let the Minister responsible answer the questions.”
However, Sayed Khaiyum says Nawaikula is not familiar with the way government functions and that opposition members have a tendency of personalizing matters.
“Everybody knows that when you have an acting minister, the acting Minister does the responds, I have been answering questions as acting minister for the past eight days, he did not have any objections then suddenly he has an objections now, if you don’t like my voice that’s the door.”
Sayed-Khaiyum says Nawaikula shows the level of contribution made by Opposition members.
He clarifies that the way government functions is that whoever is appointed as acting minister will respond to questions asked in Parliament.
