A total of 154 hectares of land has been used so far by village communities in the Northern Division for the Reforestation Programme.
While presenting his ministerial statement, Forestry Minister Osea Naiqamu said that only 46 hectares are left to be used as they target to use 200 hectares this year.
Naiqamu says the ministry has introduced an incentive payment in an effort to boost the villages work.
“I reiterate my ministry’s commitment to the proactive implementation of our reforestation programme in the Northern division, for the first time, my ministry is providing incentive payment to communities reforestation project. This has created a lot of interest and success amongst communities in the three provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata.”
Plants planted under the replanting programme include mahogany, pine, and other native plants such as damanu, and vesi.
Naiqamu thanked the private harvesting companies in the North in supporting the programme.
The Forest Ministry was allocated $200,000 to cater for the continuous support of the seedling supply as part of the Reforestation programme.
