FEA spent $28.7m on rural electrification scheme

The Fiji Electricity Authority has invested $28.7 million on the construction of rural electrification scheme across the country.

While presenting FEA’s 2015 annual report to parliament this morning, Economic Affairs, Standing Committee, chair, Lorna Eden said of which $5m were spent in construing 54 rural electrification projects.

Eden says these projects include grid extensions and power assistance enforcement work.

She adds the FEA has maintained a sustainable and profitable year.

“They managed to record a profit of $39.7 million after tax, which was a marked improvement of the $.97million turned over the 2014. Also in 2015, FEA carried out expenditure works around $80.6 million. They also paid matured bonds and loans amounting to $56.8 million and they funded $14.3 million of the Monasavu Hydro Scheme half-life repair and maintenance work.”

Eden says after scrutinizing the FEA reports, the Committee concluded that the FEA was on the right track to achieve goals of sustainable electricity.
