Fijians need to change their mentality towards engaging young people in decision making processes.
This was reiterated by Economy Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who says the youth need to be included whilst decisions as they are likely to be impacted.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the old thinking of only the elderly make decisions needs to be done away with.
He adds this is precisely why high school and university students are given the opportunity to raise their concerns during youth public budget consultations without the presence of teachers and lecturers.
“It’s about the freedom of these children to express themselves that is why the teachers are not there. In the USP campus in Laucala the lecturers stayed on and guess what happened that first few questions were asked by the lecturers, at FNU campus in Samabula they wanted the lecturers out because some of the complaints and issues they raised are about the lecturers themselves. Given the history of the education system in Fiji when you have teachers around the students feel impeded.”
Sayed-Khaiyum says teachers and lecturers are instead directed to raise their concerns during the public and private sector consultations.
The Minister highlighted this in Parliament while informing the House on the Public Consultations for the 2017-2018 Budget.
