The dual payment system for bus fares will not be re-introduced.

This has been stressed by Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum who says that the dual system will not work.

According to Opposition MP Aseri Radrodro, despite the e-ticketing system in place, people are still paying cash fares.

Radrodro says there is only one e-ticketing card supplier and questioned on whether the Government will reintroduce dual card system to cater for people in the rural areas.

Sayed-Khaiyum says that initiatives such as promotional activities have been undertaken to ensure people get permanent e-cards.

Opposition MP Prem Singh then questioned whether or not the Government intends to amend the Electronic Fare Ticketing Act 2014 to remove the heavy fines imposed on bus drivers who allow passengers without e-cards to board and travel on their bus.

“The LTA has put in place some inspectors to see that everybody is actually complying with the law, it will also be reaching out to the Fiji Police Force to ensure. That people who do try to breach there is some form of regulation in that respect. As far as penalty etc are concern of course it is a changing platform and this is why it is actually put in the regulation so should the circumstances change later on, power dynamics become different than the regulation will be amended accordingly.”

Sayed-Khaiyum adds a large scale of traveling public have adopted the e-ticketing system.
