The Minister for Education today clarified that teachers’ terms one and two holidays are not reduced to one week that was claimed by Opposition MP Mikaele Leawere, but two days instead.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the purpose of this is to provide professional development training for teachers.
Sayed-Khaiyum says this was requested by teachers themselves.
“Suring the 2018 budget announcement, we confirmed that the teachers would be required to attend school an additional seven days over the entire year. Three days before tern one begins and two days before term two and three. The Ministry’s program, professional development activities for teachers teaching days started on the 10th -12th January and continued on the 3rd and 4th May. This was done in the request of teachers themselves.”
Sayed-Khaiyum says they have consulted with the union about this and the union welcomed this effort.
He says this way no teacher will miss out on the training as they have specific days laid out for it.
