Fiji’s global profile has significantly enhanced as a result of our commitment to peacekeeping.
Fourty-years-ago Fiji sent its first deployment of 500 soldiers to Lebanon for peacekeeping duties.
This week, the Defence Ministry is holding celebrations across the country to honour our four decades of service.
Tui Macuata Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Wiliame Katonivere says it’s a time remember and reflect on the selfless sacrifice our troops made for the preservation of global peace.
“We pay tribute to our leaders at the time for their vision to involve Fiji for the greater good in the pursuance of global peace, and peacekeeping was the answer to our leader’s intention.”
Keeping the global peace came at a price for Fiji. Since the mission started in 1978, we have lost 60 peacekeepers.
They were honoured today for their self-less service and sacrifice.
Fiji currently maintains eight active missions abroad.
