Appeal for rape conviction

A man found guilty of rape has been granted leave to appeal his conviction.
Ganesh Goundar was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in August this year for raping a fourteen year old girl in Lautoka.
Goundar’s lawyers submitted that the assessors in the trial weren’t given proper direction by the Judge and that the judge didn’t properly analyse the evidence.
His lawyers argued that the sexual intercourse was consensual, because the girl had visited the accused at his invitation.
Appeals Court Judge, Justice Eric Basnayake ruled that considering the above material there are arguable matters that justify granting leave to appeal.
