Three granted bail for alleged corruption

Three people including two former staff of Water Authority appeared in the Suva Magistrates court this afternoon facing corruption related charges amounting to over $330,000.
Former Land Acquisition officer Laisiasa Valesu is charged with two counts of abuse of office, two counts of forgery and one count of obtaining a financial advantage while former Assistant Project Manager Vilimaina Kalokalo is charged with one count of abuse of office.
An accomplice, Pauliasi Simione is charged with one count of aiding and abetting.
It is alleged that between 1st June 2013 and 31st May 2016 Valesu facilitated the processing of false payment of $334,496 as claims for Crop and Land Compensation for the Manukau 5G project and Nabukalou project.
FICAC is also alleging that Valesu made false documents namely crop compensation forms and easement agreements to accept them as genuine claims.
It is also alleged that Valesu obtained $334,496 through the false documents.
He also allegedly obtained $13,348 by processing false payments for Crop compensation for Painapiu Sewerage project.
It is alleged that he made a false document namely Crop compensation form and induced public officials at WAF to accept them as genuine claims.
The second accused, Kalokalo is alleged to facilitate the false payment of $13,348 as claims for Crop Compensation for the Painapiu Sewerage project.
It is alleged that the third accused Simione aided and abetted Valesu to committing the offence.
The three have been granted bail with strict conditions.
The Suva Magistrate will make a ruling next Wednesday on whether to transfer the matter to the High court after the three opted to have their case heard in the Magistrate court.
